About Randex

Randex collects English-language online media references to Ayn Rand and her philosophy of Objectivism. Its database of references begins in February 2005. The main source for articles is news search engines such as Google.

Each article is labeled with one, two, or three bullets (???) based on the amount of the Ayn Rand-related material contained in it. A passing mention gets a single bullet; an article with several paragraphs of relevant content gets three.

The entire database of articles may be searched by text (including publication name, author, and excerpt), date, and amount of relevant content.

Purpose

The main goal of Randex is to provide an indication of the impact of Ayn Rand's ideas in today's culture. This impact can be measured by the frequency with which the ideas are discussed or mentioned, the level of understanding shown, and also by the attitude taken by writers to Rand's ideas—be it positive, negative, or neutral. As the database of references grows, it becomes a source for analyzing longer-term trends in these areas.

Listing criteria

To be listed on Randex an item must appear online as a dated article at a news, information, or opinion website. These sites include online versions of newspapers and magazines (such as the New York Times and Newsweek), web-only magazines (such as Slate), and online publications of organizations.

Articles that appear in several publications (such as syndicated articles) are listed only once.

Items that are not eligible for listing on Randex include: press releases, most blog postings, and op-eds of the Ayn Rand Institute.

The last omission stems, not from any opposition to the Ayn Rand Institute—on the contrary, the owner of this site actively supports its work—but from the purpose of the site as a barometer of Ayn Rand's ideas in the general culture. It's also true that few ARI pieces would be eligible for posting anyway, as they rarely mention Ayn Rand or Objectivism explicitly.

Personal blog posts are not included, but posts from the blogs of organizations and publications are listed if they are have the length and form of traditional articles.

On the links

Often, links will take you to sites that require free registration in order to read articles. Very rarely, a linked article will require a paid subscription in order to read it. In this case, the requirement will be noted following the link. Some sites allow free access to current articles but require a paid subscription for older ones. No special indication is made for links to articles on these sites. The general rule is that, unless otherwise noted, the article was freely available at the time the link was posted.

News links can go bad very quickly. URLs may change, or articles may be removed from sites completely. If an older link does not work, you may try using the destination website's search facility to find the article based on the title or words from the excerpt provided here. Another option is to use a general search engine such as Google.
