Tensions escalate between Senators McCain, Graham, and Paul
,
Atlas Shrugged  | McCain has quoted a Wall Street Journal editorial accusing Rand Paul of pulling “political stunts that fire up impressionable libertarian kids in their college dorms.” What observer with an ounce of perception could look at the response to Paul’s filibuster and conclude it was all coming from libertarian dorm rooms? I wouldn’t want to over-state the depth of that support either, but it’s clearly not coming exclusively from beneath a pile of empty pizza cartons, beer bottles, and dog-eared copies of Atlas Shrugged.

• • Top income earners contemplate “Going Gerard”
,
Atlas Shrugged  |Going Galt  | In honor of Mr. Depardieu, I think of it as “going Gerard.”  It’s not quite the same thing as “going Galt,” because the stampeding wealth creators of Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged were running toward something, not just escaping from a dying system.  Healthy state and national governments compete to attract taxpayers.  Unhealthy governments try to fence them in.  The really sick ones castigate them for even thinking about escape.

• • Sen. Ron Johnson and the American “tipping point”
,
Atlas Shrugged  |Going Galt  | I think this is the part of the economic and cultural breakdown that Rand got wrong, but Johnson has right. If you shout “Let it burn!” and make a big production out of escaping the clutches of the redistributive State, as Rand’s rebellious “makers” do – one of them quite literally burning his life’s work to the ground on his way out – you make yourself a target. You give the dying socialist State another group of “enemies” to rally against.

 What is a “job?”
,
Atlas Shrugged movie  |Atlas Shrugged  | Caroline May at the Daily Caller had an interesting piece about union efforts to organize the unemployed on Wednesday. It seems the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers has created an organization called the Union of Unemployed Activists (UCubed), which claims “it now has more than 100,000 jobless activists in their ranks.”No, I’m not making this up, and I don’t think Caroline May is, either.  If she is making this up, she’s really good at it, and the producers of all future Atlas Shrugged movies should hire her as a screenwriter immediately.

• • CPAC 2012: Rand Paul has a few questions for the President
,
Capitalism  |Rand Paul  | Once again, the Democrats offer malaise, as they did when Carter ran for re-election. Ayn Rand wrote of “moochers” and “looters.” Rand Paul looks at the steps of the White House and sees “beseechers.” They’re trying to squeeze blood from a stone. “There’s nothing left to give,” Paul pointed out.

Atlas Shrugged movie  |Atlas Shrugged  |Video  | John Nolte at Big Hollywood reports that MSNBC, CNN, and CNBC recently refused to air 15-second paid advertisements for a movie, for “editorial reasons.” Which objectionable piece of Hollywood smut earned this editorial disregard? What slab of cinematic violence, fried in hot sex oil and served with a side order of foul language, was so tasteless that these networks chose to turn up their noses at the producers’ money? Why, Atlas Shrugged: Part I, of course.

Altruism  |Atlas Shrugged movie  |Atlas Shrugged  |Capitalism  | The key to appreciating the violent media reaction to [Atlas Shrugged: Part One] is to understand that while the critics complain loudly about the stiff dialogue and wooden acting of Rand’s heroes, it’s the portrayal of the villains that really bothers them… and every damn word they say is completely realistic and believable.

The Chicago machine pumps out a new chief of staff
,
Capitalism  | If the President really plans to move dramatically to the Right and begin taking economic growth seriously, nothing but his actions will convince a public that long ago stopped buying into his marketing efforts. He’s wasting his time, and insulting our intelligence, by asking us to accept a Chicago crony as the hero of an Ayn Rand novel.
