• • • Catogate Update–a Q&A
,
Atheism  |Ayn Rand Institute  |Atlas Shrugged  |Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal  |Capitalism  |Leonard Peikoff  |Yaron Brook  | In writing about this unfolding scandal, I have been justly chastened by some Objectivists for painting with too broad a brush. Not all people who are attracted to elements of the school of thought championed by Ayn Rand behave like cultists. But Ayn Rand Institute Objectivists certainly have in the past. I mean: the ideological name changes, the secretiveness, the excommunications for tainted associations with outsiders — these are not hallmarks of a sane secular movement.

• • • Objectivist Humor–No, Really
,
Ayn Rand Institute  |John Allison  |Leonard Peikoff  | This being my one and only day off, I thought I’d take a break from the serious subject of the brewing John Allison-Cato Institute-Ayn Rand Institute scandal to marvel at the jaw-droppingly awesome podcasts of Ayn Rand Institute founder Leonard Peikoff.

• • • More From Deep Galt
,
Ayn Rand Institute  |Atlas Shrugged  |Leonard Peikoff  |Yaron Brook  | Related to the ongoing John Allison-Ayn Rand Institute-Cato Institute controversy, my source close to ARI writes: “If you want to scare your old coworkers at Cato, refer them to a big dust-up from two years ago involving John McCaskey.”

• • • New News on Catogate
,
Ayn Rand Institute  |John Allison  |Leonard Peikoff  | Slate‘s Dave Weigel (my friend, etc., etc.) has scooped me on two points on the John Allison-Cato Institute-Ayn Rand Institute story — one minor, one major.

• • • Complicity in Cato
,
Ayn Rand Institute  |John Allison  |Leonard Peikoff  |Yaron Brook  | In today’s installment of “John Allison, Show Us the Tape,” let me grab a posted comment and break it out for wider viewing. The writer is Irfan Khawaja, an Objectivist scholar I quoted when I broke the story that Allison, president-to-be of the Cato Institute and long-time associate of the Ayn Rand Institute, may have plans in store for Cato that are troubling.

• • • Oceania Has Never Been at War With the Cato Institute
,
Ayn Rand Institute  |Atlas Shrugged  |The Fountainhead  |Leonard Peikoff  |Yaron Brook  | In the second excerpt of Deep Galt’s communique, my source schools me on how Ayn Rand Institute Objectivists, who had for years denounced libertarians, can suddenly do a 180 and send one of their top guys to run the Cato Institute.

• • Notes on the John Allison Story
,
Ayn Rand Institute  |John Allison  |OCON  | Some folks assume I have an axe to grind with John Allison. Not so. Just read the first of two things I wrote about the man and you’ll see that I actually had a favorable impression of him. I simply want to know what he had to say to a roomful of Ayn Rand devotees, because the reports I have been able to find contradict what he had to say to the folks at Cato in ways that could lead to serious conflicts once he takes over as president.

• • • Objectivism Shrugged?
,
Ayn Rand Institute  |Atlas Shrugged  |John Allison  |Yaron Brook  | “I think you’re on to an interesting story. The whole John Allison-Cato thing has the makings of an epic disaster.” So begins the response of my source, Deep Galt, on the eminent appointment of the Ayn Rand Institute-affiliated Allison to head the Cato Institute.

• • • How Objectionable Is John Allison’s Objectivism?
,
Altruism  |Atheism  |Ayn Rand Institute  |Egoism  |John Allison  |OCON  |Yaron Brook  | Please bear with me once more because this one takes some explaining. Allison is an Objectivist, more popularly known as a Randian, associated with the Ayn Rand Institute. Following the example of their founder, Objectivists are at times sectarian and cultish. They break down into factions and excommunicate each other and many of them regard the broader libertarian movement with contempt. The Ayn Rand Institute is generally viewed as the more hardcore of the major keepers of the flame, so it seemed odd to me that an ARI guy should go to head Cato.

• • • Ed Crane Has Left the Building
,
Ayn Rand Institute  |Atlas Shrugged  |John Allison  | Who is John Allison? Some people are whispering that “Who is John Galt?” is the better question. I first became aware of the man when he gave a suitably impressive speech at the Competitive Enterprise Institute’s annual dinner in 2009, but his main entre into the world of DC libertarianism was arranged by the Ayn Rand Institute.

The American Spectator : Won't Someone Please Ask Meghan McCain to the Prom?
,
Meghan insists she would be the very “first person to tell the world” she was queer because she is “not private about anything.” But you see she is “strictly dickly” --- I swear to Ayn Rand I am quoting that phrase accurately -- and just can’t help herself. She loves sex, with men.

• • Should English departments throw in the towel?
,
[Alan] Jacobs counters the canonical approach with his “commitment to one dominant, overarching, nearly definitive principle for reading” - the description of which alone would have driven Ayn Rand around the bend: “Read at Whim.” Read because it brings you “pleasure and joy,” not because it brings you intelligence, moral certitude or increased social standing.
