Building San Antonio: Good design is good for us
Thomas Schlenker, Express-News (San Antonio, TX)
The Fountainhead |
Individualism |
Fortunately, it didn’t take long to figure out, even as a teenager, that “The Fountainhead” bore little relationship to the real world and that I was no Howard Roark. Being from Wisconsin, I was also much exposed to Frank Lloyd Wright, the brilliant individualist who did exist in the real world, marking much of it with his revolutionary buildings. While Taliesin, the Johnson Wax building, Wingspread and many homes in Chicago suburbs have dramatic flair and are beautiful to look at, their cramped, low-ceilinged rooms, uncomfortable furniture and silly decorating strongly suggested to me that architects value beauty over people.
