Few errors in political theory are so fundamentally inconsistent, damaging and persistent as the belief that appeals to the “common interest” give 51 men the authority to subject 49 to their wishes. The idea has been around as long as democratic governments, with the trial and death of Socrates serving as its ancient archetype and the torture of John Galt as its modern archetype.
