Scarcity vs. abundance
Larry Gebhardt, Idaho State Journal (Pocatello)
Atlas Shrugged |
Capitalism |
Ayn Rand’s 1957 novel, Atlas Shrugged featured plutocratic John Galt. Galt, tired of being dragged down by and distrusting of the parasitic, envious, and less talented lower class masses, revolted with his fellow capitalists, retreated to “Galt’s Gulch,” a refuge in the Rocky Mountains and enjoyed their horde of wealth and comfort. Rand preached a gospel of scarcity. Is Idaho experiencing a Galt’s Gulch vs. Rational Optimist conflict?
