I read Ayn Rand’s “Atlas Shrugged” at about the same age as Paul Ryan. But I recall that I slammed the book against the wall every few pages after reading one outrageous rant after another. The book idealized self-interest and calumniated self-sacrifice and generosity. The common good has no interest to her adherents. To them it is all about themselves. I can’t see how such a person belongs in a position to influence decisions for the country as a whole.
