Is Paul Ryan the charming, boyish one or the “let’s kill Medicare” one? The caring one or the devotee of Ayn Rand one? It’s enough to make one dizzy. Ryan is the GOP’s attempt to put a moderate face on scary stuff. However, given his authorship of a budget plan that even Newt Gingrich called “radical,” Ryan is anything but moderate. His adolescent idol remains part of his adult thinking: Ayn Rand, a radical atheist with some dicey views for a conservative Catholic such as Ryan. Her stance on brutal individualism and free market capitalism, however, fits into his plan: dismantle Medicare as we know it.
