,
Atlas Shrugged  |Image  | Conservative readers love Drudge and Ayn Rand; liberals like the Times and Noam Chomsky; and there's not much in the middle. The last infographic from Engage.

• • Obama Says Ayn Rand Is For Teens
,
Paul Ryan  | In a new interview with historian Doulgas Brinkley and Rolling Stone executive editor Eric Bates--where Obama appears to suggest Romney is a “bullshitter”--the president also weighs in on Ayn Rand. His take? Something teenagers read when they are “feeling misunderstood” but should grow out of in adult hood.

• • • Paul Ryan’s Ayn Rand Moment
,
Capitalism  |Paul Ryan  | The Atlas Society posted full audio from remarks Paul Ryan made to the Randian organization in February 2005 in honor of the 100th anniversary of Ayn Rand's birthday. In the remarks [...] Ryan praised Rand as a major inspiration on his life. But the remarks praising Rand aren't the only telling part of the audio. As the liberal Catholic magazine America noticed, later in the speech Ryan went deep into associating himself with a Randian philosophy on entitlements.

• • • When Annoying Ayn Rand Acolytes Invade OkCupid
,
Atlas Shrugged  |Egoism  |Paul Ryan  | Even if his political views don’t turn you off [...] [Paul Ryan’s] poor taste should. Reprehensible ideology aside, Ayn Rand was a genuinely bad writer. Dorothy Parker was right when she observed of Atlas Shrugged: “It is not a novel that should be thrown aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force.” The same goes for men and women who claim to love Rand’s books: Toss them out like yesterday’s trash (or just don’t respond to their advances, whatever). They don’t always have Bible Salesman haircuts, but they do embrace bad writing and a simplistic dogma of radical self-centeredness that appears to have been crafted specifically to convince the dim-witted among us that they understand “philosophy.”

• • Pants-On-Fire Politics
,
The convention's fixation on Obama's "you didn't build that" line [...] may have caricatured the president, a bit — but far less than Obama has flatly claimed. Obama invoked the phrase in his own battle with an Ayn Randian straw man — "people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart"— and he was making the case for a robust and respected government role in the private sector, a core of the electoral argument. To say he was taken out of context was to say his words were meant to be trivial and meaningless — that he was merely saying that his audience had not in fact constructed the road outside with their hands, an absurd interpretation.

 The Next Paul
,
Rand [Paul] is universally known, in Paul world, by his first name alone, which he and his father insist isn’t derived from that of the libertarian philosopher Ayn Rand.
