• • It Usually Begins With Ron Paul ... and Yoga?
,
Atlas Shrugged  |Egoism  | Ron Paul and Ayn Rand, and Objectivists taking up yoga. What does this have to do with anything? It seems that the yoga sports apparel store Lululemon - based in Canada - has "severely alienated its core constituency" by printing the phrase "Who Is John Galt?" on its bags.

• • • Atlas Shrugged II Review
,
Atlas Shrugged movie  |Atlas Shrugged  |Capitalism  | Jane and I went to see "Atlas Shrugged II" the other evening. It was terrible! The Dagny and Rearden characters had none of the quality of Rand's people — or even of those in "A.S. I." As Jane said, Dagny looked more like Dagny's mother than did the "A.S.I." Dagny. She reminded me more of Hillary Clinton. In contrast with Rand's Dagny, in this film version she had more of a look of worry than resolve.

Ryan-Rand and the Myth of Pack Journalism
,
Paul Ryan  | The establishment mainstream media is often attacked for its clone-like, group-think mentality, particularly among the so-called "punditry" of independent-minded opinion journalists. That this is a blatant lie is demonstrated here. There was no attack memo issued from the bowels of the Democratic National Committee’s ministry of propaganda directing journalists to viciously smear presumptive GOP VP candidate Paul Ryan by writing scurrilous lies linking him to novelist/philosopher Ayn Rand (who has been deceased for thirty years). That is just another baseless allegation without evidence of conspiracy mongering on the part of the lower sorts.

• • Sarah Palin and Gary Johnson
,
In her interview with Katie Couric, Sarah Palin infamously could not answer what newspapers and magazines she read. I thought of this while listening to Robert Wenzel interview Gary Johnson. In response to the question: "Who are your favorite, say, top two or three libertarian authors?" Johnson finally mentioned Ayn Rand, but then acknowledged that she was not a libertarian fan and that objectivists are not necessarily libertarians.

• • • Response to Mark Shea, re: Catholics and Libertarians
,
Atheism  |Egoism  | What is with Shea’s obsession with Ayn Rand? Every single reference to libertarian theory made by Shea ends up going back to Rand as the final word on libertarian theory. Let me take this opportunity now to say this: To all of you who think that Ayn Rand is the dominant, or even one of the dominant voices in libertarianism right now, please feel free to leave the 1970s behind and join us in the 21st century. Indeed, even when Rand was at the height of her powers, she was still only one of several important voices in the movement. [....] Rand didn’t self-identify as a libertarian but as an Objectivist. Objectivism, her militantly atheist and hyper-egoist philosophy that rested on very separate foundations from the larger libertarian philosophy in her own time and in the period since, extends well beyond the normal bounds of libertarian theory which is a political theory only.

Reisman on Free Speech; Not Quite There
,
Personal life  | [George Reisman] writes as if [the Berkeley] campus of the University of California, like Zuccotti park, was private property. But even a fraction of a moment’s reflection will reveal this to be a total falsehood. Rather, this institution is state — not private property, and any analysis of private property that does not take into account this primordial libertarian fact must go off the rails. This is precisely the error committed by Reisman’s mentor, Ayn Rand, as exposed in this article [PDF] of mine.
