Ayn Rand, it seems, has been lurking in the background behind countless Republican candidates over the past few decades and her influence on them has been anything but good.

Fox News and the rest of the conservatives would have been crying about how President Obama likes the teachings of a writer that expounded on the virtues of egoism, selfishness and atheism. It would have been a topic 24/7.

Ayn Rand Institute  |Anthem  | Two George Jenkins High School juniors won cash prizes and the Ayn Rand novel of their choice as semi-finalists in the annual Anthem Essay Contest. Lauren Nash, daughter of Lou and Donna Nash; and Shivangi Patel, daughter of Kalpesh and Shilpa Patel, entered the contest following the reading of the Ayn Rand novella, "Anthem," last year in their Pre-AP English II class. The essays were among 16,000 entries from ninth and tenth grade students.

Sandy Chin, 31, said her feminist side would never allow her to have a ring that, as she puts it, "shows you are the possession of someone else, which is disgusting to me." So, instead of a ring, her fiance bought her a first edition copy of “Atlas Shrugged” by Ayn Rand.
